Twenty-Six: Alethea

The teacher explained the instructions and left the groups to work independently.  After ten minutes he walked around and noticed that Alethea’s paper was blank.  “Do you understand what to do?” he asked.

“I understand,” she said.

A few minutes later he checked again.  Her paper was covered with stars and umbrellas and footballs.  “You don’t understand,” he said.

“I don’t understand,” she agreed.

She went shopping with her aunt, who said, “I’ll buy you any dress you want.  What’s your favorite color?”

“What’s yours?” Alethea asked.

When the boy tried to kiss her underneath the yellow porch light, Alethea kissed him back.  “I love you,” he murmured.

“I love you,” she said back.

They watched the stars from the bench seat of his pickup truck.  “You’re my queen of the universe.”  He stroked her back and felt for the hooks.

“You’re my ticket out of hell,” she replied, laying down.
